Tyne Team Tournament a “success again” according to organiser

The annual Tyne Team tournament was a “success again” according to its’ organiser after St Gabriel’s claimed the title last weekend.

The final finished 3-2 with St Gabriel’s winning the deciding mixed doubles match, which went to three ends, to give them their second Tyne Team title.

The tournament saw eight teams from the Tyneside area compete with at the Tyneside Badminton Centre in Newcastle.

Organiser Andrew McGill said: “The standard throughout the day was excellent and everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves.

He added: “St Gabriel’s had the strongest team throughout the day so they deserved their victory but they were however pushed very hard in the final by Elmfield Lightening who saved their best performance until last.”

St Gabriel’s beat Elmfield Lightening in the final when Sarah Renton and Steve Porter, St Gabriel’s captain, won the deciding match 21-19 19-21 21-15 at the Tyneside Badminton Centre.

St Gabriel’s reached the final after topping Group B winning all three matches.

They beat Odd Jobs 4-1, Elmfield Thunder 4-1, and NESLC 5-0 to finish in first place with Odd Jobs second, Elmfield Thunder third, and NESLC fourth.

Elmfield Lightening topped their group too with a 100 per cent record.

They beat Riverside 4-1 before beating Telecom and Newcastle University by the same score line.

Group B finished with Elmfield Lightening first, Telecom second, Newcastle University third and Riverside fourth.

St Gabriel’s then beat Telecom 3-0 in the semi-final while Elmfield secured their place in the final beating Odd Jobs 3-1.

McGill said: “The tournament was a success again, however, unfortunately the entry was down to eight teams this year from 12 last year.

“There were some excellent performances from some of the younger players on the day that can only bode well for the future.”

He added: “Special thanks must go to NHIP’s Trevor Rutherford who provided sports injury treatments all day and the fantastic prize for treatments for the winning team.”

“We are also grateful to Yelex for their support of the tournament.”
